Unfortunately, we will never stay here again. The rooms are well appointed. The bathrooms are nice. The restaurant has great cocktails. However, on two separate occasions our room smelled like marijuana. The building shares the upper floors with residence Apartments, and the HVAC system is connected. Apparently if someone is smoking weed in the wrong place it filters into the rooms. This happened later in the evening and we were in town for a doctors appointment. Unfortunately, at that point my wife was too sick from traveling to deal with trying to change hotels. The manager on duty was unwilling to comp our room because I was already booked under a discounted rate. Never staying here again!

As many other reviewers mentioned, this hotel is bad. They do not refund no matter the circumstance. Room was dirty and smelled horrible. Staff didn’t care and didn’t make it right. Do not stay here. Expensive for nothing. I lost 200 dollars for stepping in a room that was disgusting and asking to cancel. They did cancel my reservation for me! But then said they wouldn’t give me my money back ?

Originally booked the Kimpton-Cardinal for 5-nights, one-bedroom suite. Arrived at the hotel & was told that valet service was available for $26 per day or park around the block in the parking garage for $9 per day. There is no on-site free parking. Check-in process was easy & lobby was very modern & clean. Room was large with a living-room & a bedroom with a walk-in shower, an enormous tub & the bed was very comfortable. My two younger children were to sleep on the pull-out trundle. Once I pulled out the trundle, I noticed that there was dog hair underneath the couch & some type of old dog biscuit (hotel is pet friendly). Obviously, the couch has never been pulled out & vacuumed underneath. The pull-out trundle had no sheet nor any blankets/pillows however, after a call to the front desk blankets/pillows were delivered. Also, as I pulled back one of the curtains a crumpled-up box and a cup was left on the window ledge. Hotel is located in downtown Salem-Winston with not much to do nearby. For the above reasons we ended our stay short & stayed the rest of our trip at the Graylyn Hotel which was a 5min. ride to Wake Forest University the main reason why we were there. |Positives- in-house restaurants were great as was the staff. Morning coffee was abundant & the gym was top 5 in all the hotels that I have ever stayed at.

Very unhappy with my recent experience with the hotel. I made a reservation and had to cancel due to my daughter getting pneumonia. I was still charged the full amount for the room ($203) and when I called to dispute it was told that because it was a discounted rate the deposit is non refundable no matter when you cancel.

I then asked if I could use the deposit for a new reservation and was told that because I cancelled I could not reschedule. I have to ask, if the deposit is non refundable why even give the option to cancel? Poor policy and poor customer service! It’s a shame because I enjoyed my previous stays at the hotel. Hopes this helps someone because it is safe to say I will not ever see my $203 again.

Overall, the rooms are comfortable and the service is great. Room service food was good too. We paid almost $100/night extra for a Premium Exterior View and end up with a view of the back of a parapet wall and some office windows across the street, so be careful about paying extra for a view. The surrounding block or two are office buildings, not a tourist feel, if that’s what you are looking for.

Located in an old Tobacco company building with plenty of old-charm elegant details. The rooms are beautifully decorated with modern touches. No pool, but an excellent gym and entertainment room with a bowling alley, pin pon table, arcades, footbolito,
and shuffleboard. The personnel are very attentive. There is no microwave in rooms, but as other reviewers pointed out, you can request one. Pet friendly hotel.

Wow! One of the best hotels we’ve visited! The Kimpton hotels haven’t let us down. The room was clean and simply gorgeous. The building is so unique! The Katharine had great breakfast, and the bar served wonderful cocktails. Our family loved the bowling and basketball activities in the recreation room. Very family and dog friendly! Would highly recommend!
